Nintendo's Japanese branch will discontinue the Aqua Blue 3DS, one of the two colors available since the system launched in 2011, according to its website. No explanation or announcement of any kind was made: The company simply added a note reading "Production will soon cease" in the upper left of the product's web page, as seen above.

The Aqua Blue 3DS was central to the marketing campaign surrounding the 3DS, and remains a popular consumer choice. Amazon Japan currently lists it as the second best-selling 3DS model, trailing the Ice White model that is not yet available in the United States.

Nintendo introduced a new Cobalt Blue 3DS in March, putting the total number of available colors in Japan at six. Perhaps that was just one shade of blue too many.

In other termination news, Nintendo will end its free "Itsu no Ma ni Terebi" video service on the 3DS, the company announced. A Japan exclusive, the program delivered short 3-D videos produced by the Nippon and Fuji television networks. The service was free of charge and included advertisements.

Unlike Netflix or Hulu in the U.S., Itsu no Ma ni Terebi videos were not streamed but downloaded onto the 3DS hardware via the SpotPass service. Typical clips included animals, horoscopes and first-person footage shot from moving vehicles.

A quick glimpse of the interface and its content can be seen on YouTube. Note that the uploader used an Aqua Blue 3DS, making his video soon to be double-obsolete.

In announcing the cancellation, Nintendo said over one million customers had used the service. The company added that other video content on the 3DS, such as episodes of Game Center CX, would continue via direct download from the eShop. The program will end on June 20, one day shy of its first anniversary. A similarly-named "Wii no ma" video service for the Nintendo Wii also ended this past April.
