Understanding Planetary Rulers, Sun and Moon in Your Zodiac Sign

The Planets in the Horoscopes

Accordingly, the natal horoscope, which is used in astrology to depict a stylized visual map of the universe or heavens at the time of birth in order to interpret the inherent meaning underlying the alignment of the planets at that moment, is specifically focused on the individual at its centre, with the Sun, Moon, and celestial bodies considered to be that individual's personal planets or stars, which are uniquely relevant to that individual alone.

The idea is that the planets' placement at any given moment in time reflects the nature of that moment and especially anything that is born then, and this can be analyzed by making use of the astrology and a variety of rules for interpreting the 'language' or symbols therein.

And according to Pythagoras in his theory known as the Harmony of the Spheres, he proposed that "the Sun, Moon and planets all emit their own unique hum based on their orbital revolution, and that the quality of life on Earth reflects the tenor of celestial sounds which are physically imperceptible to the human ear."

Western astrology is founded on the movements and relative positions of the planets, sun and moon in the zodiac at the time of birth and their movements or transits through the sky in the past, present and future are considered to be the major influences on the zodiac signs.

Understanding the Planets

In astrology, the seven classical planets are those easily seen with the naked eye and these include the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Each of these planets is a ruling planet for a specific zodiac sign.

Planets and their Zodiac Signs

  • Sun is the planetary ruler of Leo. It represent the conscious ego, the self and its expression, personal power, pride and authority, leadership qualities and the principles of creativity, spontaneity, health and vitality.
  • The Moon is the ruling planet of Cancer. It is associated with a person's emotional make-up, unconscious habits, rhythms, memories, moods and their ability to react and adapt to those around them as well as the mother, maternal instincts or the urge to nurture.
  • Mercury is the ruling planet of Gemini and Virgo. It represents the principles of communication, mentality, thinking patterns, rationality and reasoning and adaptability and variability.
  • Venus is the ruling planet of Taurus and Libra. It is associated with the principles of harmony, beauty, balance, feelings and affections.
Mars is the ruling planet of Aries. It is associated with confidence and self assertion, aggression, sexuality, energy, strength, ambition and impulsiveness.
  • Jupiter is the ruling planet of Sagittarius. It is associated with the principles of growth, expansion, prosperity, and good fortune.
Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn. It is associated with the principles of limitation, restrictions, boundaries, ambition, career, authority and hierarchy.
  • Uranus (Saturn) is the ruling planet of Aquarius. It is associated with the principles of genius, individuality, new and unconventional ideas, discoveries, electricity and inventions.
  • Neptune (Jupiter) is the ruling planet of Pisces. It is associated with idealism and compassion, but also with illusion, confusion, and deception.
  • Pluto (Mars) is the ruling planet of Scorpio. It is associated with power and personal mastery, and the need to co-operate and share with another

Take note that there are some planets that rule two signs.

In interpreting a birth chart, the "chart ruler" is the planetary ruler of the sign on the Ascendant, or first house. For example, if Aries is the Ascendant, the chart ruler would be Mars. If Taurus is found on the second house, then Venus is said to rule the second house. If Gemini were on the second house, then Mercury rules the second house.
