Pushkar fair is one of the most appropriate events to get a feel of the vibrant tradition and culture of Rajasthan. It is one of the most colourful and charming fairs held in India and is a fine example of the diversity of culture and tradition in the country. The Fair is held every year in a small town called Pushkar situated in the Thar Desert around 14 km from Ajmer. This small town in Rajasthan is surrounded by mountains and sand dunes.

Pushkar fair is held every year between the months of October and November during Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and a visit to the same is simply an unforgettable experience. The fair is a five day affair during which people from across the country come to do business deals and tour the Mela.

Pushkar is one of the five holiest cities of Hinduism. It is the only place in India with a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. It is believed that a holy dip in the sacred Pushkar Lake and a visit to Lord Brahma's Temple is a must for everyone and is also believed to relieve you from all your sins and ensure an entry in the heaven. It is also believed that a dip in the holy lake cures all ailments as well. According to Hindu mythology, the Pushkar Lake was formed when the Lotus flower fell from the hands of Lord Brahma and found its way to this small town. Later Lord Brahma chose the site to perform his Yagna.

The annual Pushkar Fair transforms this small Rajasthani town into a large canvass on which there are many small make-shift shops, selling variety of products, food-joints, tattooing shops, Astrology and palmistry centres etc. One of the major attractions of the fair is the catt! le fair. Cattle owners from all over the country come here to trade cattles. Another major attraction of the Fair is the camel festival. Around 50,000 camels, decorated with colourful garments and jewelleries, participate in the race.

Thousands of tourists from all over the globe come to the fair to have an experience of the rich culture and tradition of not only Rajasthan but also of India. Around 20,000 people participate in the fair on average and visitors are simply awe inspired by the intensity of fun and frolic during these 5 days. The Fair is an ideal destination to shop beautiful Rajasthani handicrafts and local artifacts. From colourful turbans, ghagara cholis to local jewellery, you can pick up almost everything here at very reasonable rates. Food lovers can have a taste of lip smacking local and Indian delicacies in the fair.

The liveliness and diversity of people of Rajasthan have made this fair a festival to celebrate where thousands of tourists come every year to have an experience of the lifetime and take a lot of beautiful memories to cherish afterwards.
